현재 미국의 하버드대학교, 프린스턴대학교, 미사간주립대학교, 위스콘신주립대학교, 버지니아대학교, UCLA, 보스톤 대학교, 뉴욕주립대 스토니부룩 캠퍼스, 켄사스주립대, 시라이대학교 등에는 한국불교 혹은 불교학을 공부하는 한국스님이나 한국사람들이 많다. 앞으로 한국불교나 비교종교 등으로 미국에서 박사학위를 받을 한국사람들이 많이 나올 예정인데 본지에서는 오래전부터 이에 관심을 갖고 자료를 수집하였다. 본지에서 수집한 자료로는 한국불교를 주제로 하여 미국에서 석사 혹은 박사를 받은 첫 번째 사람은 임영신씨이다. 중앙대학교를 설립한 임영신씨는 1933년 Tracing the Dominant Factors Which Are Changing Korea from A Buddhist to A Christian Nation 이라는 논문으로 남가주 대학교에서 석사학위를 받았다. 이 논문은 Professor Taylor, ProAfessor Hill, Professor Cook씨가 심사한 것으로 되어 있다.
아래의 자료는 한국불교를 주제로 박사학위를 받은 한국인이나 타민족 사람 혹은 한국불교는 아니더라도 한국인으로서 불교관계를 주제로 박사학위를 받은 사람들으로 본지 편집위원인 이종권씨가 조사한 자료를 토대로 본지에서 몇 사라믈 추가하여 만든 것이다. 연도별로 정리하였다. 혹 여기에서 빠진 사람이 있는지는 모르겠다. 그런 사람이 발견되면 추가로 발표할 예정이다.
